Security Agreement (BSA) between Afghanistan and the US last week a day after new Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s swearing-in bodes well for Afghanistan and the region The relationship of Ghani’s predecessor Hamid Karzai with Washington had steadily deteriorated over his refusal to sign the pact Yet without the BSA and the parallel pact signed between Kabul and Nato — which will together allow 12000 foreign troops including 9800 from the US to stay on in Afghanistan for the twin missions of training Afghan security forces and conducting counter-terror operations — the safety of Afghan citizens as well as the security and survival of the Afghan state would be at risk Both Ghani and his erstwhile presidential rival Abdullah Abdullah who is now chief executive had promised to sign the agreement But even as their respective camps bickered over the disputed run-off the Taliban gained ground in several parts of the country The two pacts are directly tied to the continuity of aid worth billions of dollars to Afghanistan and the residual force that will be left behind is a fraction of the Nato troop strength at the peak of the war The remaining 9800 US troops will be cut in half by end-2015 preceding a full pull-out by end-2016 While the pacts are welcome they also carry a message that time is not on the side of either Ghani or US President Barack Obama Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warning at an interaction at the Council on Foreign Relations during his recent visit to the US that Washington must not repeat its mistake in Iraq pointed in the same direction India which has invested heavily in Afghanistan’s reconstruction has reason to fear the extended impact of a resurgent Taliban and a vulnerable Kabul on the subcontinent given that Pakistan’s attempts to destabilise its northern neighbour for its own strategic gain are unlikely to cease The onus of running and securing Afghanistan rests with Ghani and his government the long-term survival of which remains in doubt After the Taliban the economy is the greatest threat to Afghan political stability As a former World Bank economist Ghani knows his job The question is whether he will have the latitude to do it own Netflix special titled Abroad Understanding Related News Indian-American comedian Hasan Minhaj pulled no stops as he roasted US President Donald Trump at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner last week He was hence lauded across the world including by people in India with many film celebrities hailing the several jibes he took at the expense of Trump Similarly when Hollywood giant Meryl Streep slammed Trump on the Golden Globes stage in January Bollywood stars didn’t stop raving about her But both the occasions are reminders of the fact that even as Indian stars back international artistes for speaking their mind they hold back when it is about socio-political issues back home Actor-stand up comedian Vir Das recently launched his own Netflix special titled Abroad Understanding which caters to both Indian and international audience and so the topics he touched ranged from racism to homophobia to of course Trump As the comedian sat down to talk about his special (which has been garnering acclaim) with indianexpresscom he reasoned why stars here are afraid of being politically incorrect Also read |Can’t crack jokes about the government in India: Vir Das “I don’t think people in power are the problem People in power have a sense of humour Those who worship them do not have a sense of humour I have performed for politicians I have performed for political people They are all very witty very intelligent There’s a big problem between following a politician respecting a politician and following him So I think the majority of India respects a politician but there’s a minority in India who worships them and those people get upset when you crack jokes” The actor said that while there are many celebrities who would love to express their opinions on things that matter they are not allowed any space for that as people are always ready to pounce at them “Celebrities should come forward and speak their mind Anyone speaking their mind is a good thing The essence of social media is that everyone is a critic everyone is a genius everyone is entitled and is writing 4000 words on everything But it is a double-edged sword where being opinionated is very good being celebrated for being opinionated is very good but it is limiting in a certain as well” Vir Das at one of his gigs (Source: Conan O’Brien/Facebook) Talking about how artistes need freedom so that they can send across a message he says “If you look at my special there are many jokes which have a message then there are some which will make you uncomfortable and silent then there are familiar things jokes which you heard many times before because you need that also and then also you put really stupid jokes To me a good comedy show has all of those things but when you read too much into it and you want every joke to convey a message then suddenly… The essence of this job is to be a clown tripping and falling… So you got to give artistes the freedom to do that as well especially opinionated artistes” So in a scenario where the easiest thing to do is to offend someone does he think a tradition like that in the White House where one gets to roast the President can ever happen in India “That’s the tradition of the White House The format is that you have to roast the President and the President will roast you back It’s a beautiful tradition where the President and the fourth estate come together one evening and they acknowledge each other He didn’t show up for the dinner but it was a great comedy piece I hope something like this happens here I don’t think it will be anytime soon but I would love to hope for it” the actor answered As for his own special Das is thrilled at the response and has already been planning something new with Netflix “We were expecting a good response but this is insane It has just been five days and I am already doing interviews because people are loving it It is crazy The special has struck a chord by the virtue of its context where we did go for it We didn’t hold back There was racism homophobia Kashmir India-Pakistan and Trump Everything we went for In that sense we struck a chord with people I have been getting tremendous response from both India and abroad That was the plan I want to be known as global artiste Also Netflix is a great team to work with and we have been talking about something but it’s too early to talk about it” For all the latest Entertainment News download Indian Express App IE Online Media Services Pvt Ltd More Related News| Vadodara | Published: February 17 2017 3:52 am Top News In for heeding the need to give such appearances So it is not surprising that confusion reigns about how drastic may be the changes the ICC will bring to how the game is played structured and financed Conflicting versions are floating about how total a dominance the so-called Big Three of international cricket — India England and Australia — truly wanted to establish and therefore to what degree that planned dominance was ultimately thwarted at the ICC’s board meeting in Dubai this week But changes some pending the stamp of individual cricket boards are definitely afoot — and in its characteristically unaccountable manner the ICC has obliquely framed the challenges that face cricket today Among the almost done deals in Dubai headquarters of the International Cricket Council are a few that relate to Test cricket A Test cricket fund will support financially weaker sides The proposed World Test Championship to have been launched in 2017 in England stands abandoned In its stead the ICC’s Champions Trophy a one-day tournament will remain so that last year’s trophy will not be the last after all That obviously takes care of the ICC’s revenue stream For us viewers this is a blessing The prospect of living through another absolutely pointless Champions Trophy with matches mostly among unequals and all of it without the buzz of the World Cup is the lesser evil One of the most mystifying and widely articulated demands of recent years had been a championship to settle the Test champion The idea of assuming all things to be equal and deciding Test supremacy in a championship defies the history of cricket You only need roll back to the drawn Test at Johannesburg during India’s recent tour of South Africa to be reminded that in the five-day game there just cannot be a neat hierarchy among victories losses and draws That draw in December turned out to be the most dramatic of all outcomes Take another example Sunil Gavaskar participated in many victories but would you place his heroic 96 against Pakistan’s unplayable spinners in his last Test at Bangalore in 1987 as anything less Pakistan won the Test to take the five-Test series 1-0 but Gavaskar was the man of that match The point of these references is to argue that while the idea of quantifiably deciding the best Test team is inviting it just cannot be done The ICC’s problem may be what to do in case the Test final ends in a draw but the issue goes beyond such specifics It should be a no-brainer to say that Tests are not quantifiable across their uniquely bilateral context and storylines I’ll go on and state the mildly heretic view then that the ICC’s decision to end the Future Tours Programme with schedules to be decided among hosts and visitors is welcome In the past couple of decades it’s been a source of reassurance to cricket that it is in fact expanding its footprint if all Test-playing countries are assured of a definite place in a pre-decided schedule home and away matches from which the big teams cannot walk away big for their on-field dominance or the revenue they bring to their matches (basically India) But this reassuring timetable has cramped Test cricket with teams squeezing their Test commitments into a calendar earmarked with more and more T20s As the FTP has played out it dotted the international calendar with far too many one- or two-Test series that draw little interest from even the Test faithful let alone bring in the intended casual spectator more keen on ODIs or T20s Leaving teams to determine what series when and of how many Test matches and how often is the better way to revive the narrative buzz the essential context and gradual build-up of a series that set apart Test matches from anything else any sport has to offer May I go a step further The ICC or specifically the Big Three has come under fire for the reported plan (now aborted) to relegate some Test teams to a second tier so that like plays with like But in and of itself would Test cricket really be so badly served if a new competitiveness were to be introduced among teams on the lower levels of the first tier and those bidding to get back in contention It would in fact open up the game to new contenders But This was to be accompanied by an obnoxious plan that the Big Three would not be relegated in any eventuality even the rumour of which should put us all on notice that pending some show of purpose perhaps the health of Test cricket is not what the great ICC shake-up is all about Therein lies the problem Leadership in strengthening Test cricket is being asserted on the basis of three teams’ ability to rake in revenue It would be so much more convincing if the Big Three especially India took some unilateral correctives to demonstrate fidelity to the five-day game by giving their Test teams a chance to explore the full potential of cricket’s long form As a recent book (Saving the Test by Mike Jakeman) contends about the effect of hurried scheduling in Test cricket with shorter series and fewer practice matches “It is hard to conceive of another sport that does so much to deny its fans exciting matches” Abandoning a Test championship and the FTP to bilateral Test engagement can only be an unqualified good if it comes with demonstrable intent to allow Tests to be something more than a nod to the old-fashioned game that has to be squeezed into a tight calendar Cricket has got used to accelerating the game whenever there is an impression that matches are getting dull That works very well in ODIs and T20s Test cricket needs far more imagination and indulgence from the ICC and more importantly the BCCI to retrieve excitement The writer is a contributing editor for ‘The Indian Express’ For all the latest Opinion News download did not name anyone but said that "they" want Akhilesh Yadav to lose under all circumstances whereas "we" want that a Samajwadi government should be formed in Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of Akhilesh The letter went on to elaborate that "our approach is positive theirs is negative With the Chief Minister are people who have shed their blood for the party faced insults whereas on the other demonstrations held by youth wing leaders and supporters Udayveer Singh had on Friday written a letter to party’s national president Mulayam Singh Yadav levelling serious allegations against Shivpal presidents and other special invitees in Lucknow at which he announced that only Akhilesh would be the Chief Minister in case the Samajwadi Party won the 2017 Assembly election Shivpal Yadav also said that he would be part of the Vikas Yatra planned by Akhilesh Yadav from 3 November and asserted that there would be no compromise with party discipline The action against Udayveer followed shortly afterwards Later in the afternoon senior SP leaders went to meet Akhilesh Yadav at his residence These leaders included Mata Prasad Pandey Beni Prasad Verma Kiranmoy Nanda Reoti Raman Singh Naresh
