Active members of Chabad at USC gathered together for the groundbreaking of the new renovations to the Chabad House. The event featured a home-cooked brunch, a self-guided tour of what changes will be made to the house and speeches by leaders in the Jewish community.Groundbreaking · Students, administrators and supporters of the Rohr Chabad Jewish Student Center at USC gather Sunday to celebrate the start of construction on a new building. – Devra Traiman | Daily TrojanThe ceremony marked the first effort to fundraise for the 125-year-old house’s renovations. Because of the history behind the home, not many foundational changes can be made: The only option is expansion while keeping the look of the inside the same.Chabad has been at USC for 13 years, and has used the house for the past 10; however, the house is now in a state of disrepair and requires a good amount of maintenance. Some of the plans include extending the kitchen out by eight feet, tripling the size of the dining hall and adding a large porch on the second level for social gatherings. The ceremony featured posters of computer models of the new house, as well as proposed floor plans. The renovation costs could total than $3 million, so leaders at Chabad are reaching out to the Jewish community to raise funds for the hopefully year-long construction project. Some students who frequent the Chabad house, like Jordan Harmon, a senior majoring in fine arts, said they fully support the renovations.“It’s necessary because the bigger the Chabad house, the more Jews that can come; it deserves help, the people here are amazing and they need a new place to create Jewish life,” Harmon said.Chabad’s primary weekly event is their Shabbat, held every Friday night for all students or community members who wish to eat, socialize and celebrate their faith. Many students rave about the delicious home-cooked food made by Rabbi Dov Wagner’s wife, Runya Wagner. This warm welcome usually sees the dining room packed to capacity, with students overflowing outside the house.Chabad leaders hope the renovations can help them successfully cater to the school’s growing Jewish presence.“The dining room is packed all the time, there’s no room and they’re really splitting tables,” said Eric Pakravan, a junior majoring in business administration. “If you need to leave, the whole room has to stand up so you can leave the dining room, so [renovation] is definitely very needed, and hopefully it’ll bring more people to Chabad in the future.”The open arms of the Wagners and the Jewish Greek life in fraternities like Alpha Epsilon Pi and Sigma Alpha Mu have helped the Jewish community at USC become very close, and religious leaders hope this renovation will add to this relationship.“More than other religious groups on campus, Chabad really provides a family setting and a home away from home,” said Varun Soni, dean of religious life at USC. “To create this incredibly nurturing and supportive environment, we really do need a bigger space here.”Though raising the money will no doubt be a challenge, the Chabad House sees the renovation as necessary to acheive their dreams.“That’s what we’re doing here today: Dov and I had our hopes and dreams, populations and balance sheets, but ultimately we’re doing a ground-breaking,” Runya Wagner said. “Not because we’ve got the commitments in hand, or the money in the bank, but because we know it needs to be done. And if it needs to be done, it will be done. That I can guarantee you.”
Asuncion, Paraguay | AFP | South American football confederation CONMEBOL agreed Monday to award the Copa Sudamericana to Brazilian club Chapecoense, whose team was wiped out in a plane crash while heading to the final.“CONMEBOL awards the title for the 2016 Copa Sudamericana championship to Chapecoense,” including the $2.0 million in prize money, the confederation said in a statement. The unsung club was having a fairy tale season until the charter plane flying it to the biggest match in its history ran out of fuel and smashed into the mountains in northwestern Colombia a week ago, killing 71 people. The side was heading to play the first leg of the final against Colombian club Atletico Nacional in the city of Medellin. Share on: WhatsApp Nacional responded to the crash by calling for Chapecoense to be granted the Copa Sudamericana, the second highest club football title in South America. The confederation said it had heeded Nacional’s request in deciding to hand the title to Chapecoense. It awarded Nacional its CONMEBOL Centenary Fair Play award.“There is no greater demonstration of the spirit of understanding and fair play… than the consideration and respect shown by Atletico Nacional to its brothers in Chapecoense Football Club,” the statement said. The small Brazilian city of Chapeco held a massive funeral on Saturday for its team after the victims’ coffins arrived home, each draped in the club’s green and white flag.A minute’s silence for the team was scheduled to be held before every Champions League and Europa League game this week.
Facebook28Tweet0Pin0 Submitted by Jeffrey Scott, Owner of Desco Audio & VideoThere is a BBC Radio 4 program that started in 1942 called Desert Island Discs. The format is simple – a guest is invited to choose eight discs, a book, and a luxury to take with them as they’re castaway on a mythical desert island. They’re given the complete works of Shakespeare and the Bible. During the interview, they explain their choices and discuss key moments in their lives, people, and events that have influenced and inspired them and brought them to where they are today. The radio show still plays to this day and has aired over 3000 episodes. I’ve been an audio/music junkie since about 1977. Here are some of my favorite albums and why they are special to me.Steely Dan – Aja – Photo courtesy of Desco AVSteely Dan – Aja (new re-issued 180 gram vinyl)This album started my obsession with Hi-Fi and great music. When my older brother was about 18, he got this awesome Sansui stereo system and threatened me with great bodily harm or death if I ever touched it. So, as soon as he left the house, I snuck into his room and fired up his turntable and discovered music like I had never heard before. The album he had on the platter was the new Steely Dan Aja. I was too young to understand all the lyrics and but the fusion of Jazz and Rock that came together makes this one of the greatest albums of all time. I just knew I loved it. I still listen to it, and we stock the new pressings in vinyl at our store.Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker – I’ve Got the Music in Me – Photo courtesy of Desco AVThelma Houston and Pressure Cooker – I’ve Got the Music In Me (Sheffield Lab Records direct-to-disc vinyl)In the mid-70’s Doug Sax and Lincoln Mayorga created a music label called Sheffield Labs that perfected direct-to-disc recordings. Instead of making a master tape and editing it together, they cut the music straight to a lacquer lathe and made the master lacquer platter live! I didn’t discover these albums until the early 80’s. The music is Big Band, R&B, Jazz Fusion and is absolutely fantastic. These songs are all done in one take and captures a magical music moment. It is a very difficult album to find in good condition. There is an unopened copy on eBay for $133. If you buy it, give me a ring. I would love to listen to that first play! I could not live without my copy of this recording.Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon – Photo courtesy of Desco AVPink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon (180 gram vinyl and CD)Although The Dark Side of the Moon came out in 1973 and was an immediate success, I didn’t discover it until 1979 when it was re-mastered and released as a Mobile Fidelity half-speed master. This was the first theme based album with songs that blended into each other. It had sounds and effects that are unlike the albums of its day. I am sure most of you are familiar with the work as it is still one of the best-selling albums of all time. It has currently sold over 45 million copies worldwide. This record makes me miss the way records used to be made – as whole concepts. In this iTunes world we live in, concept albums seem a thing of the past. Perhaps that is the appeal of vinyl. With a record, the listener gets to enjoy the whole meal instead of an appetizer.Eagles – Hotel California – Photo courtesy of Desco AVEagles – Hotel California (vinyl or CD)Released in 1976, Hotel California, was the Eagles fifth studio album. I liked the sarcasm and smart lyrics in this album as well as the great cohesion that this band has. Every artist in the group had significant contributions to the final product. The members of the Eagles are all such accomplished musicians. I always have an easy, peaceful feeling when listening (sorry, couldn’t help stealing their line).Erich Kunzel & the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra – Tchaikovsky’s 1812, Capriccio Italien and Cossack Dances – Photo courtesy of Desco AVErich Kunzel & the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra – Tchaikovsky’s 1812, Capriccio Italien and Cossack Dances (CD or vinyl)I was introduced to classical music in about 1981 when a girl I liked invited me to her All-State Concert in Seattle. The All-State Symphony performed Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, and I was hooked. I had never heard full orchestral music live and could not believe how moving and powerful it was. The themed attacks of the music that built to this giant crescendo was both amazing and breathtaking.I did not have to look far for the best recording. Telarc Digital had a vinyl record for sale of the Capriccio with the 1812 Overture as the headliner. There were warning labels on the album. Most record players could not play the album because they recorded real cannons for the 1812 Overture. It made such wide modulations on the record that most needles would jump out of the groove. Who doesn’t want a record with torture-your-system warnings? I bought the album and enjoyed finding a cartridge that could play it. If you ever find the vinyl album – be careful – it is a challenge for most phono cartridges. The recording was an early digital master and is wonderful fun.Mikhail Pletnev – Scarlatti Keyboard Sonatas (CD)Mikhail Pletnev – Scarlatti Keyboard Sonatas – Photo courtesy of Desco AVI love listening to the piano, and this double CD recording is beautiful. Never have I heard such passionate interpretations of Scarlatti’s music. Mikhail Pletnev is a masterful pianist. He took Scarlatti’s Sonatas originally meant for the harpsichord and elevated them to lush involving romantic interpretations. Some harpsichord purists may not care for this piece, but I find that his playing combined with one of the best recordings of a piano to be captivating. Bonus info is that this CD has been re-issued and is available on Amazon for only $12.93! Julian Lloyd Webber, Sir Yehudi Menuhin & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – Elgar Cello Concerto – Photo Courtesy of Desco AVJulian Lloyd Webber, Sir Yehudi Menuhin & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – Elgar Cello Concerto (CD or vinyl)There are many great recordings of the Elgar Cello Concerto. This performance is not only well recorded, but the scale is large and the stereo image expansive. Recorded in 1985 it still passes the test of time. There are a few significant recordings of this piece, the most well known is the recording by Jacqueline Du Pré, who made the piece popular on the world stage. But, Yehudi Menuhin was a musician who had worked with Elgar and Julian Lloyd Webber is a fabulous player who is often looked over due to the fame of his brother, Andrew Lloyd Webber.Elgar says that he wrote the Cello Concerto as an image of a man contemplating the meaning of life. It is a haunting and passionate piece of music. This is one of those pieces of music to be played late at night and savored.Crosby Stills and Nash – CSN – Photo courtesy of Desco AVCrosby Stills and Nash – CSN (vinyl and CD)David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash released this studio album in the summer of 1977. CSN was the first studio album the three had created together since the Deja Vu album in 1970. The writing is creative, and the vocals are tight. One of my favorite tracks to use for demos is In My Dreams written by David Crosby. The stereo recording has beautiful imaging with the guitars and voices focused across the whole soundstage.I hope you enjoyed reading about my favorite Desert Island Discs. I would love to hear your favorites. Post them in a comment below. I am always looking for new music to experience. If you ever want to hear my list, stop by the store and ask for a demo.

The Nelson Mandela Route starts in the Eastern Cape, in King William’s Town, which began as a London-based Missionary Station in 1826 and provides a backdrop to early European influences in a struggle region of British, Boer and Xhosa conflicts. The town’s Amathole Museum has a Xhosa Gallery, Missionary Museum and German Settlers display. The grave of Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko is also in the town. The Mandela Route moves through Bhisho, home of the provincial government, and takes a scenic drive on the N2 to Mthatha, which hosts the Nelson Mandela Museum. The museum is a collection of heritage sectors spread across three locations: Qunu, Mveso and Mthatha. A display reflecting the life and times of Mandela can be found at the Bhunga Building section of the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha.Mandela has received thousands of gifts from presidents, groups and ordinary people. Accepted on behalf of the people of South Africa, they are in safe-keeping at the museum for the benefit and appreciation of the nation. Artefacts ranging from children’s letters to bejeweled camel covers say more about the donors than their famous recipient.Scenes from Mandela’s childhoodThe second sector of the museum is the Community Museum and Youth & Heritage Centre in the village of Qunu, where Mandela spent his childhood. Here, tourists can view the remains of young Nelson’s primary school, the rock he used to slide down with friends, and the graveyard where his son, daughter and parents are buried – all set in the rolling hills of Pondoland, where Mandela grazed his family’s cattle.Alongside the N2 is Mandela’s current home, where he entertains a steady stream of people from the neighbouring village and holds an annual party for children on his birthday. A tunnel running under the N2 allows visitors to “cross” the road in safety.A thatched open-air museum at Mveso – the third sector of the Nelson Mandela Museum – shelters a photographic exhibition depicting significant moments in Mandela’s life. Nearby are the remains of the homestead where Mandela was born and raised.Free guided tours of all three sectors of the Nelson Mandela Museum can be arranged via the museum in Mthatha. The Mandela Route then moves back to East London, which has a museum housing a superb collection of southern Nguni beadwork.Staying on the trail of the man himself, one has to leave the Eastern Cape, as he did.Mandela in JohannesburgThe Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg is a state-of-the-art tribute to the rise and fall of apartheid. Twenty-two exhibition areas take the visitor on an emotional journey through a state-sanctioned system based on racial discrimination. It was put together on a seven-hectare site by a team of curators, film-makers, historians, designers and architects. Film footage, photographs, text panels and artefacts depict the epic saga of apartheid.Mandela’s humble house in Orlando West, Soweto has been turned into the Mandela Family Museum. It houses an assortment of memorabilia, paintings, photographs and collection of honorary doctorates bestowed on Mandela from universities around the world. This matchbox home at 8115 Ngakane Street was the abode that Mandela shared with his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko Mase. She moved out after their divorce in 1957, and when Winnie Madikizela married Mandela in 1958, she then moved into this Soweto home.Mandela seldom stayed here as he was living life on the run as the “black pimpernel”. Nearby is the Hector Pieterson Memorial to the schoolboy shot during the June 16 riots of 1976, as well as the home of Nobel Peace laureate Desmond Tutu.Mandela’s larger-than-life character and famous “Madiba jive” are also captured in an outsize 6 metre statue at the upmarket shopping destination Nelson Mandela Square (formerly Sandton Square) – a prime photo opportunity for tourists. This famous builder of bridges between people has also had the largest cable-stayed bridge in southern Africa named after him. Ex-political prisoners act as tour guides in a place of exile and imprisonment which epitomises the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.
Last month GBA presented an overview of the Recovery Through Retrofit Report, an analysis prepared by the White House that identified three barriers to the formation of a national retrofit market and three ways those barriers could be overcome. On Monday, the New York State legislature, with the support of Governor David Peterson, took aim directly at one of those barriers – inadequate access to retrofit financing – with the passage of a bill authorizing municipalities to establish programs that will finance energy efficiency improvements, including the installation of renewable-energy systems, across the state. The financing mechanism, known as Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE), is supported by federally funded programs, including the Department of Energy’s State Energy Program. PACE has already been adopted for use by dozens of municipalities, including some in New York, and also has been authorized for full deployment by 14 other states.Advancing green financingFinancing for PACE programs is raised through bond issues. Homeowners tend to favor PACE loans because the application process is fairly simple, transaction costs are relatively low, and the loan payments, which are added to the property tax bill of the house being upgraded, are spread out over relatively long period of time – usually 15 to 20 years.New York lawmakers hope the new bill will not only reduce the state’s carbon footprint, but encourage the creation of jobs in the energy efficiency and renewable energy fields. And if energy efficiency advocates have their way, the bill will be just a first step toward eroding barriers to retrofit financing.“PACE is a powerful tool for advancing energy efficiency retrofits, creating badly needed jobs and reducing global warming pollution,” Ashok Gupta, director of energy policy for the Natural Resources Defense Council, said in a statement. “New York has taken an important first step on PACE and we look forward to working with the legislature and the governor to quickly expand the scope of this bill beyond PACE programs relying on federal assistance.”

FREDERICTON – Tributes were pouring in Monday for veteran New Brunswick and federal politician Keith Ashfield, whose death at the age of 66 was announced Sunday.Rick Lafrance, president of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick, posted a short message on Twitter announcing that Ashfield had passed away.“On behalf of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick I want to express our sorrow upon the passing of Keith Ashfield,” it said. “Our deepest sympathy to Keith’s wife, Judy, his family and to everyone who loved our friend and colleague.”Ashfield served as the member of Parliament for the riding of Fredericton from 2008 to 2015 and filled a variety of positions in then-prime minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet. From 2011 to 2013, Ashfield was the federal fisheries minister, but was defeated in the 2015 federal election.Harper also posted a message on Twitter, expressing his appreciation for the long-serving politician.“A champion of New Brunswick, Keith Ashfield’s advice was always sought and valued at the cabinet table,” Harper wrote. “Laureen and I mourn the loss of a great Canadian and friend.”Ashfield was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, but had reportedly beaten the disease by the fall of 2014 and announced last month that he would seek a nomination to run as a provincial Tory in the fall election. Before his time in federal politics, Ashfield served as a provincial member of the legislature from 1999 to 2008. He was named deputy speaker of the legislature and was later sworn in as minister of natural resources and energy.“Saddened to hear of the passing of former provincial and federal cabinet minister Keith Ashfield,” New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant, a Liberal, said on Twitter. “Keith was a dedicated public servant and he will be sorely missed.”From 2011 to 2013, Ashfield served as the federal minister of fisheries and oceans, but was defeated in the 2015 federal election.“Tremendously saddened to learn of the passing of Keith Ashfield, a much-admired member of our Conservative family and a friend to all of us,” said federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer.“As an MLA, MP, and cabinet minister, Keith was always a champion for the people of New Brunswick. His loss will be felt across the province.”(Global News)
