James E. MillerJames E. Miller fought for socialism and working people all over the world. He was just 65 when he died on April 14.Jim grew up in Madison, Wis., and attended the University of Wisconsin during the late 1960s. The Black liberation struggle was surging forward and so was the movement against the Vietnam War.Like Berkeley in California, Madison and its big campus became a political center. Police attacked University of Wisconsin students demonstrating against Dow Chemical, which made millions supplying the Pentagon with napalm that burned people alive. Black student athletes at UW led struggles against racism.Tens of thousands of young people across the United States wanted to make a revolution within what Che Guevara called “the belly of the beast.” Jim Miller was one of them.He was attracted to Marxist theory and read the works of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Mao, Plekhanov and Trotsky. Above all, Jim Miller was a fighter. He joined the Milwaukee branch of Workers World Party in 1967 and became chair of Milwaukee’s chapter of Youth Against War and Fascism. YAWF contingents in anti-war demonstrations proudly carried the flag of Vietnam’s National Liberation Front.YAWF’s number one job was to fight racism. YAWF members joined Father James Groppi and the NAACP Youth Council in marching inside the old Milwaukee Auditorium in 1968 to disrupt presidential candidate George Wallace’s hate rally. Wallace was an Alabama governor and one of the U.S.’s top racists.Fighting racism meant defending Black Panther Party members Booker T. Collins Jr., Jesse Lee White and Earl W. Leverette. They were framed on ridiculous charges of firing a shotgun at a Milwaukee cop through the back side window of a Volkswagen Beetle!Every Sunday, YAWF members joined scores of other militants in picketing the House of Detention, where the “Milwaukee 3” were held. Sheriff’s deputies pointed their weapons at them.Milwaukee police have a bloody history of murder and brutality. During the single month of December in 1974, cops killed four Black people, including the unarmed 16-year-old Jerry Brookshire.Milwaukee Police Chief Harold Brier repeatedly denounced YAWF in 1968 for daring to leaflet high school students. Also in 1968, YAWF organized a bus to go to Chicago to protest Mayor Daley’s cops clubbing demonstrators at the Democratic Convention.“Red Squad” police officers would regularly park their vehicle in front of the local Workers World Party and YAWF headquarters at 150 East Juneau. In 1971, Milwaukee police attacked a demonstration protesting the Attica prison massacre. They arrested three YAWF members: Benita Orozco, Jim Miller and Bill Colangelo.A few months later, “Red Squad” cops attempted to storm the local party headquarters. They were beaten back but several comrades were arrested. These cops were furious that YAWF had helped organize an 800-person strong demonstration that night against George Wallace and Defense Secretary Melvin Laird, who had spoken at two adjoining meetings. The most serious charges were against Comrade Benita Orozco, who was facing years in jail for allegedly beating police at the Attica protest.Jim Miller became the heart and soul of her defense, doing much of the tedious and painstaking work required by a legal defense. Judge Hugh O’Connell almost had conniptions when a jury acquitted Benita Orozco.Jim also helped to defend the anti-war GIs known as the “Camp McCoy 3.” Their indictment was announced by Attorney General John Mitchell, who himself was later to be sent to prison as one of the criminals in the Watergate case of illegal interference in the 1972 presidential election. What made Jim’s diligent effort even more amazing was that he was working the nightshift at a bakery.Union leader and fatherJim Miller was greatly influenced by the older, worker revolutionaries in the Milwaukee branch of Workers World Party. These included Betsey Stergar and Al Stergar, and Shirley Plaster and Earl Plaster. These four had stood firm during the McCarthyite anti-communist witch hunt of the 1950s and became teachers for a new generation of revolutionaries.Milwaukee was one of the most segregated cities on the planet. But thousands of Black workers were employed in the city’s factories. As late as 1980, half of the African Americans employed in Milwaukee held manufacturing jobs.Jim went to work in the bakery proudly wearing a “Free Angela Davis” button on his leather jacket. He defended workers and became president of the bakery workers local union.Jim later became an American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union organizer in Fond du Lac, Wis., before returning to work in a bakery.Bakery work helped kill Jim. Like millions of other workers, Jim Miller’s early death is probably linked to occupational causes. For years, Jim was forced to breathe in flour dust while working. But this didn’t stop Jim from enjoying life. He was a loving father to Peter and Sara Miller. And while he was a student of Marxism, Jim was also a sports fan, particularly of the Dodgers, because Dodger African-American star Jackie Robinson integrated major league baseball in Brooklyn.Long live the memory of Jim Miller, bakery worker and revolutionary!FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare this

Some Hoosiers have already filed their taxes and received their refunds, but there are some who may not even have gathered up their paperwork to get started. The April 15 deadline is just a week away and, according to IRS Indiana spokesman Luis Garcia, for most taxpayers filing is a simple process and can be done online through e-file. For those who owe, but do not have the money to pay up right away, Garcia said the IRS offers payment options to help them meet their federal tax obligations.“We can adjust for what you can pay and what is for the foreseeable future assumed to be your income,” he said. “A lot of people think it’s the end of the world, or all sorts of bad things are going to happen, and that’s not the case at all.”Taxpayers will avoid penalties by either filing by April 15 or requesting a tax-filing extension and paying an estimate of what is owed, if anything. He pointed out that it is an extension to file, not an extension to pay, and added that those who are unable to file and think they will owe should go ahead and make an estimated payment by the 15th.“If you were self-employed, or a person whose taxes are a little bit different than the standard W-2 and your income, your deductions, and everything have pretty much been the same since last year, you would want to pay that same amount as last year, maybe pad it a little bit,” Garcia suggested. As usual this time each year, there are some phone and email scams targeting taxpayers. Garcia said the scammers claim they are from the IRS, telling people they are behind on their taxes and demanding immediate payment. And while the Caller ID may indicate “IRS,” he said that’s not the case; it’s a fake.“In most cases you are going to have several letters from the IRS before you receive a phone call, but it’s very rare that you will get a call out of the blue from the IRS, and we will certainly not use threatening language and we will not ask for immediate payment on a credit card or wire transfer,” the IRS official said.According to Garcia, an estimated 82 percent of taxpayers in Indiana will receive refunds, this year averaging $3000.More information on filing is available online at IRS.gov.Indiana News Service

Backing Up ProjectsAbove, I said I sometimes use the export option to back up a project file off-drive because I’m incredibly paranoid about losing an edit. However, in Resolve 15, we also have a dedicated backup system. First, let’s distinguish between creating a backup and autosaving. When Resolve automatically saves your project, it overwrites the existing save with a new version that includes all of the changes since the last save — the basics right? A backup, however, will be of an older variation of the project, depending on when you create it.For example, Resolve creates backups every X minutes, every X hours, and every X days. If you generate backups every 20 minutes, you’ll have three backups until the creation of the hourly backup. The first hourly backup is inherently going to be different from the third hourly backup. This system is ideal if you accidentally delete an important timeline and don’t realize it until it’s too late. With backups, you can revert to an earlier version of the project. To find the project backup option, hit Ctrl+ to open the preferences panel (also located under DaVinci Resolve in the top menu), and select “Project Save and Load.”With this setting activated, Resolve will save multiple backup projects comparable to the grandfather-father-son backup rotation. By default, this setting is inactive; therefore, if you’re loading up Resolve for the first time and want to automatically back up your projects, you’re going to need to turn this feature on.As you can see from the menu, there are a lot of backup options, and after a day of editing, you’re going to have many backups of your project. You don’t have to worry about there being too many, as they only generate when changes are being implemented — and they write over themselves on a first-in-and-out basis. Once you reach your maximum X-minutes backups, the first one will get replaced with the next X-minute backup and so on.To find your backups, head to the Project Manager, right-click, and hit “Project Backups.” From here, you can load and delete individual backups. Interested in Resolve’s capability as an NLE? These guidelines will help you navigate working with project files in this renowned application. When you initially open Resolve, you’ll see a project window called the Project Manager. Here, you can load an existing project, or you can create a new project from scratch. However, you may notice that you don’t get to choose where the project file will be stored. Even when saving your project through the “Save Copy As” function, you still don’t get to choose the location — only the name. This is because Resolve operates within an industry-standard database system. Any item that isn’t a media file will be stored in the database. Admittedly, if you haven’t worked with a system like this, it can seem daunting at first. A quick Google search for “DaVinci Resolve save location” will bring up hundreds of frantic search queries from worried users. In hindsight, I can say it makes a lot of sense. All projects are stored in the same place on your system drive, but if you need to back up, transfer, or import a project, you do so within Resolve and not in explorer or finder as you would with Premiere. In fact, renaming or moving projects outside of Resolve can result in a project becoming corrupted. It’s a big no-no.Let’s have a look at how you execute these tasks.Transferring and RestoringIn your Project Manager, right-click on a project and select archive. This will copy all of the media in your project to the destination folder. Rest assured: the original media will remain untouched in its original location. It’s important to note that if you’re using hundreds of gigabytes of media, not only is the process going to take a while, you’re also going to have to make sure the new drive has enough available space. How an archived project folder will appear. With your project fully archived, you need to restore it to use in Resolve. Back in the project window, right-click anywhere, and hit “restore.” Navigate to the archived project folder, and select open. Resolve will then import the project, bins, and media exactly as you left them prior to archiving. If you were previously a Premiere Pro user, you might find yourself in familiar territory with this process.Import and ExportWhen you open the contextual menu in the project manager, you’ll also see an option to import and export a project. At first, this may seem like the same thing as archiving and restoring, but the primary difference is that you are only exporting the project files — the timelines, bins, settings. Everything but the media. This is for when you need to work from a different computer, and you already have the media on the other machine. If you’re hyper-cautious, you could also use this function to make a backup of your project to store in the cloud or on a flash drive.A quick note regarding this process: if you export a project, then place it on the desktop of a new computer, you will be unable to open the project directly from the file itself. It doesn’t matter if you associate the file type with Resolve, it still won’t open the software. Even if you have Resolve open, the project will not load. You have to import back through the project window. However, when you import a project from another computer, you’ll notice that all of the media is offline — even if you have the same media on your computer. Therefore, you will need to relink your media.Thankfully, this is a very straightforward process. You don’t want to individually relink media clips, as that’s a tedious process — as is relinking individual bins. Instead, right-click on the master bin, and select “Relink Clips for Selected Bins.” From here, navigate to your media folder, click open, and Resolve will relink the missing files. Save AsFinally, we have the “Save As” function. I’m sure everyone will know how Save As works, but it’s important to know that when you use Save As, you will immediately switch over and begin editing the new copy, not the original.Perhaps the most crucial bit of information about the way Resolve handles project files is their deletion, as deleting a project from the Project Manager is permanent. As you can see in the popup above, you cannot undo the action — you will not find the project file in the recycling bin, and if you go to the database folder on your hard drive, you won’t be able to bring it back by hitting Ctrl+Z.Lewis McGregor is a certified DaVinci Resolve trainer.Looking for more on Resolve?
