Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Anne Dorrance, Ohio State University Extension plant pathologist. As farmers and consultants have been out checking their soybean stands, they are finding spots on the leaves. The most common spotting on the unifoliates and first leaves is caused by Septoria glycines. This is a fungus that overwinters on the previous soybean crop residue and in modern cultivars it is limited to the lower canopy. We’ve done extensive studies on this disease over the past decade and I have yet to attribute an economic value in managing this. We did this one experiment where put chlorothalonil on every week (not a legal application but for research purposes only) and could only measure a three- to four-bushel increase when the soybean plants were totally clean of this disease. Secondly, applications of herbicide plus fungicide did not manage this disease throughout the season nor do the R3 applications. At todays’ fungicide application costs and soybean prices, this is makes it hard break even. The one disease we have gotten substantial response to fungicide applications is frogeye leaf spot. There are a few high yielding soybean cultivars that are very susceptible to this disease. Yield losses of eight to 35 bushels have been recorded. The fungus that causes this disease can overwinter in Ohio. this was confirmed by studies in Illinois as well. This fungus, Cercospora sojina, can also spread via large storm fronts, hurricanes from southern states where it can build up and the spores can be carried to new areas. This happened in 2005 and again last summer based on my own scouting of test plots. The symptoms are gray centers surrounded by a deep purple circle, which forms the lesion. Under high moisture conditions, the spores of the fungus will form in the lesion on the underside of the leaves, actually look like whiskers. There are a few herbicides, adjuvants, foam markers that under the right conditions will cause similar looking symptoms. The easiest way to check is to place leaves with these symptoms in a plastic bag and see if they form the whiskers (or spores) overnight. These bags just need humidity, not a lot of free water. Also note, this fungus will infect new leaves and if it is established with every rain event there will be continual infections of the new foliage. To manage this disease, foliar applications at R3 have been very good in Ohio at managing this pathogen. One note is that we have documented that strobilurin resistance is here in Ohio, so if you have any questions please send us these leaves, we do have time to test the fungicide sensitivity before you will need to spray.
steven walling Box.net has partnered with Fuze Meeting to add real-time online meetings and screen sharing. Now the SaaS file-sharing and collaboration suite, which is going after SharePoint head on, has the added component of Web conferencing. For those unfamiliar with it, Fuze Meeting is a fairly slick alternative to popular options like GoToMeeting, Dimdim and WebEx. The company — formerly a public one listed as Callwave — was recently revitalized and now revolves around its online software service. Both software as a service offerings are on a freemium basis, so there’s a complete spectrum of payment options. The limited personal versions are free, while real enterprise use will require an annual fee. Using Fuze as part of your Box account will allow you to conduct meetings, share your desktop (which requires a download), and upload your Box files to a Fuze collaboration space.Box has added the Fuze Meeting support as part of its OpenBox system, which allows users to share their files with a plethora of services. Everything from Gmail to Zoho and beyond can be connected to a Box account, so this is really just another addition to the ecosystem for Box. But Fuze is competing against some extremely entrenched services, namely WebEx and GoToMeeting. To draw in Box account holders, an enterprise user base that is naturally more open to new SaaS tools, might be a big boost in its quest to gain market share. According to new data from Forrester Research, more than half of what the report calls “conversationalists” are female and 70% are 30 years old or older. Forrester’s data also shows that 59% of all U.S. Internet users now use social networks and that 70% consume content on social media and social networking sites. As Forrester analyst Josh Bernoff notes, two years ago, when the company first looked at similar data, people’s online behavior with regards to creating and consuming content was very similar to what Internet users are doing today. One major difference, however, is the rise of conversational interactions. People still blog, comment and vote on social news sites like Digg and Reddit. Over the last two years, however, the fastest growing group in Forrester’s surveys have been conversationalists who use Twitter and Facebook to post status updates and engage in conversations with their friends.More People Join Social Networks – Number of Creators Remains StableCreators – those who publish their own blogs or upload audio they created – now make up 24% of all Internet users. Joiners – those users who maintain a profile on a social networking site – make up 59% of all users. Interestingly, while the number of joiners has grown rapidly, the number of creators has remained relatively stable over the last few years. This makes sense, though, given that it’s very easy to join a social network but relatively hard to create a podcast or maintain a blog.Forrester classified 17% of all respondents as “inactives.” These users don’t participate in social networking activities at all. One change is the presence of an icon for the voice and video chat plugin. If the person you’re chatting with from within Gmail doesn’t have that plugin, you can one-click the icon to issue them an invitation. Extant features such as “Go off the record,” “Block”, and “Send SMS” are available above the chat window. Unfortunately, these functions don’t seem to extend to the Gtalk client. Unlike Skype’s recent beta there is no group video chat. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market
